Internet Marketing After The Holidays Posted By : Halstatt Pires

Alas, another glorious holiday shopping season ends online. Is it time to call it a year and relax? Not if you want to make some more money.

Internet Marketing After The Holidays

As we all know, the holidays are the hot time to produce massive revenues if you are selling anything that remotely could be classified as a gift. If you fall into this broad category, you should have killed it during the last nine weeks. If you did

not, you are doing something very wrong and need to reassess your site and marketing efforts.

As we approach December 25th, many sites will mistakenly start winding down their marketing efforts. After all, everyone knows the online shopping season is over. Nobody will be buying anything online until late January when men everywhere start panicking about Valentine’s Day. Right? Like many common notions, this one is a bunch of…well, it is wrong.

E-commerce sites are the trail blazers of the retail world. More than a few snide comments and snickers are thrown in the direction of brick and mortar retailers. While I tend to be in this group, there are some things we can learn from our brick and mortar brothers. One rule is there are plenty of sales to be made in the week or two after the holidays.

Admit it. Someone is going to give you a gift that makes you gag. We all get them and then try to figure out a nice way to ask what store the gift came from so we can return it. If you are like me, you will get lots of winter clothing from relatives. I live in San Diego. “Winter” is 65 degrees. Brrrrr. I really don’t need that triple layer down Himalayan parka. What am I going to do? Return it for cash. What am I going to do with that cash? Save it? Pay bills? No, that would be acting responsibly. I am going to buy junk I really want!!!

This key to making more sales after the holidays is to recognize that a lot of people are going to return gifts and have cash on hand. While they will not be compelled to buy like when they have to find a gift for Uncle Lou, they will still be buying. Your conversion rates will drop a bit, but you can still turn the virtual register over at a healthy pace.

If you blow off the last week of the year, you are going to leave a lot of money on the table…err, web. Don’t! Besides, you should be getting ready for Valentine’s Day already!
