On November 17, 2006, during a stand up routine at the Comedy Club in LosAngeles, two African American hecklers told Richards that he wasn’t funny.Richards responded by stating he was rich and could have them arrested andthrown out of the Club. A verbal jousting ensued at which time Richardslost control and shouted “Shut up!” …”Fifty years ago we’d have had youupside down with a f**king fork up your ass!”
While several audience members apparently laughed, Richards’ racismcontinued. “You can talk, you can talk, you’re brave now motherf**ker!” heshouted. “Throw his ass out! He’s a n****r!” Richards repeated the word”n****r” four times and stated “They’re going to arrest me for calling ablack man a n****r.” When one of the African American men responded,Richards stated “When you interrupted me, pal. That’s what you get forinterrupting the white man.”
In a purported attempt at contrition, Richards appeared on the DavidLetterman show during an appearance by Jerry Seinfeld via remote hookup andstated, “You know, I’m really busted up over this and I’m very, very sorryto those people in the audience, the blacks, the Hispanics, whites –everyone that was there that took the brunt of that anger and hate and rageand how it came through, and I’m concerned about more hate and more rageand more anger coming through, not just toward me but toward a black/whiteconflict.”
